The inquiry is being carried out by the force's complaints and discipline department.

Polce spokeswoman Evelyn James Barnett refused to disclose the identity of the officer or the nature of the the complaint, but she confirmed to The Royal Gazette that an investigation had been launched. In a statement she said: "A Police officer has been suspended from duty pending the results of an investigation following an allegation made by a member of the public.

"Because the investigation is underway, we are unable to comment further at this stage.''
