Road accident victim payout to rise

The maximum payout to victims of road accidents is to rise by more than $100,000, Government announced today.Transport Minister Terry Lister said changes to the Motor Insurers Fund mean accident victims will be able to receive as much as $375,000 the maximum payment was previously $250,000.The maximum payout in a single accident will also rise, from $500,000 to $750,000.The fund was established in 1990 to benefit people injured in accidents caused by uninsured drivers or drivers who have not been identified.“The fund is really an important facility that makes it possible for those who otherwise would be left on the side of the road, unable to pay for their own treatment,” Mr Lister said.“People in Bermuda have been at risk all along of being struck by someone without any insurance. We started this fund to make sure people could get some coverage.”He said the initiative was one of two intended to help protect the public from uninsured drivers, the other being an automated system to catch and charge the drivers.“We have also put stickers on cars to tell if you are insured and installed cameras around the Island that can tell if you are driving uninsured,” he said. “We have already been having people show up in court and be charged.”Useful Website: www.gov.bm
