Store reward honest Johnny
after dropping $200 he knew just what to do.
The 10-year-old chased after the man, and handed back the cash.
Amazed and full of gratitude, the man gave the Dellwood Primary School pupil a $5 tip.
Now Johnny is in line for a commendation from Shelly Bay MarketPlace, where he works every Saturday and after school on Wednesday. He is likely to receive a certificate or letter, plus a $25 award.
Johnny, of Wellington Back Road, St. George's, is the pride of his family, and his bosses, but yesterday he was modest about his honesty.
"The money was not mine, and I never thought about keeping it for myself,'' he said. "I had seen the money come out of the man's wallet, and then he left the shop.
"I ran after him and gave him back the $200. He told me `thank you for being for honest' and gave me a $5 tip.
Johnny said he would have given the money to his bosses if he had not spotted the man.
Mrs. Teresa DeBraga said she was immensely proud of her son, whom she had brought up to be honest. "I think it's wonderful. A lot of children, not to mention adults, wouldn't have done the same.
"I am glad he is doing the right thing. He enjoys working at the store. It provides him with some extra money.'' Ms Anna Govia, front end manager of the store, said a commendation for Johnny had already been approved by the MarketPlace head office.
"I wrote a letter explaining what he had done, and it was felt he should receive a commendation.'' Ms Govia took some personal satisfaction in Johnny's good deed.
"I have worked with these little boys and girls, and to start with they were somewhat unruly and all over the place. But I got them organised, and now they've come round. I am very proud about what Johnny has done.
"It reflects well on the company, and also his parents.'' PHOTO HONESTY PAYS -- Johnny DeBraga is to receive a commendation for his honesty.
