And a new programme has been added to the traditional tennis and golf classes which provide children with something constructive to do with their time during the summer holidays.

Government and Community Services Minister Yvette Swan said this week there will be 14 camps and workshops this year targeted towards young people between the ages of 4 and 16 years old.

Sen. Swan said there were four principal camps for the summer of 1998. These were the Headstart Fun Camp. Computer Science Fun Camp, Cultural Connections Fun Camp and the new Cultural Connections Workshop.

The Headstart Fun Camp, for four and five-year-olds, aims to sharpen basic reading, writing and math skills, she said.

The Computer Science Fun Camp, for students between the ages of six and 11, provides hand-on experience with Macintosh computers.

Both summer camps will be held at the Victor Scott School, Mrs. Swan added.

The Cultural Connections Fun Camp, for six to 11-year-olds, will expose youngsters to local history and culture.

"This workshop is designed to expose young people to Bermudian talents, history and culture and includes exposure to a great many arts and crafts including cooking, embroidery, herbal remedies and other things of that nature,'' Sen. Swan said.

The sessions will be held at St. George's Community Education Centre in St.

David's.

And the new Cultural Connections Workshop, for 11 to 16-year-olds, aims to build on the start of the Cultural Connection Fun Camp.

"The curriculum is similar to that of the Fun Camp and exposes the kids to some of the arts of yesteryear, taught by some of our most experienced and knowledgeable seniors,'' Mrs. Swan explained.

The three-week workshop will be held at St. Paul's Christian Education Centre in Paget and runs from July 6 to July 24.

The rest of the courses will begin today and run for five weeks until July 29.

Each course, which begins at 8.45 a.m. and finishes at 3.30 p.m., will cost $60 per week (prices are different for tennis and golf classes).

Mrs. Swan also said that there will be after-care service from 3.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. for the Headstart and Computer Science Fun Camps for an additional cost of $10 per week.
