SOS slams MPs over hotel bill

Save Open Spaces says Parliamentarians have failed Bermuda, after they agreed to allow an amendment to the Castle Harbour Redevelopment Act 1998 on Friday night.

The amendment, which includes a new clause which prohibits the golf course to be used for any other purpose without permission from the House of Assembly and Senate, clears the way for the renovation of the resort.

New homes have been earmarked as part of the plan on the 192 acre site.

But SOS, which fought hard against any development on the resort, say the project is fundamentally against the best interests of Bermuda and its tourism industry.

And the group is unhappy that neither they nor the National Trust was allowed to speak to the Private Members Bills committee on the subject.

An SOS spokesman said: "Money is given preference over environmental concerns.

"Bermuda is one of the most densely populated places in the world, yet our politicians show no environmental awareness.

"Bermuda's Planning Statement gives all sorts of very good protection for open spaces. Routinely, Minister after Minister of the Environment ignores them so one person after another can make some money.'' SOS said a stop had to be put on developing open spaces and start re-using existing properties or "there will be nothing left''.

"We are not against the recapitalisation of our tourist industry, we just ask that our politicians use a little common sense and not be pressurised into unwise decisions that are clearly against the long term interests of Bermuda.'' House debate: Page 5
