Sexton, Mewett handle the rain
Fidelity Couples Race yesterday in a combined time of 55 minutes, 15 seconds.
Sexton was fourth overall in the men's 30-39 age group in a time of 30:35 as Mewett, the Island's top female runner over the longer distances, won the women's 40-49 division in 21:40. That time was just seven seconds slower than Karen Adams' winning time of 21:33 in the 20-29 age group.
Second overall were Jamal Hart, sixth in the men's 20-29 group in 29:25, and Lynn Kynoch, third in the women's 20-29 group in 23:07. They had a combined time of 52:32, just 17 seconds behind Sexton and Mewett.
Simon Groves teamed up with Adams to finish third overall in 53:00, as Groves added his 10th-placed time of 31:27 in the men's 20-29 section to Adams' winning time in her category.
Completing the top five in the Open category were the pairs of Neil de Ste Croix and Donna Tiffin (54:38), fourth, and fifth-placed Adrian Robson and Jane Christie in 54:39.
The Married class was won by Brett Forgesson and Anna Eatherley in 49:16, their combined time being eight-and-a-half minutes ahead of second-placed Rod Allen and Sandra Allen who finished in 57:35.
Forgesson was 20 seconds behind visitor Spyros Barres in the men's 20-29 age group in 26:55 while Eatherley was also second in the same age group for the women, completing the course in 22:21, behind Adams. Barres' time of 26:35 made him the fastest male overall.
Cup Match cricketer Andre Manders and his wife Cherie finished a creditable third in 59:43. Andre was sixth in the men's 30-39 in 31:01 while Cherie was 21st in the 20-29 division in 28:42.
Ronue Cann won the men's 30-39 race in 28:54 as he and partner Kimberley Roberts finished 11th overall in the Open category. Roberts won the girls 12-15 group in 28:24.
Other category winners were Annette Booth in the women's 30-39 in 23:19 and Lorna Singh in the women's 50-59 in 40:29. In the male category, Garon Wilkinson won the boys 12-15 in 33:52, Barres the men's 20-29 in 26:35, Jeremy Ball the 40-49 in 28:48, Mike Rickards the 50-59 in 33:50 and Ludwig Cann the 60-and-over division in 32:20.
The race started and finished at Fidelity on East Broadway, the men completing a five-mile course and the women a 3.6-mile course.
One hundred and two teams completed the race, in six categories. There were also six visiting couples from the United States competing in the non-resident category, which was won by Barres and his wife Amy.
