Molnar, Lessing snap Aussie stranglehold

Australian stranglehold in a ITU Triathlon World Cup event in Stockholm, Sweden, on Saturday.

Lessing produced a sizzling time of 32 minutes and two seconds over the 10-kilometre run leg to beat Brad Beven by 19 seconds for his first victory of the campgain. And Molnar pulled away from Rina Hill over the last two laps to pick up the first World Cup win for her country.

The series, which hits Bermuda on September 21, had been dominated by Aussies, in particular Emma Carney, Chris McCormack -- the respective points leaders -- Beven, Greg Welch, Shane Reed, Carney and Hill through the first five races.

But on Saturday, Lessing cut a 2:23 deficit after the bike, taking the lead for good at the six kilometre mark of the run. His final time was 1:48:40. New Zealand's Hamish Carter was third in 1:49:06.

Carney, the defending Bermuda champion and hot favourite in Stockholm, withdrew after five kilometres on the run, claiming a chest infection. That opened the door for Molnar, who won the ITU Junior Triathlon World Championship a year ago. Her time was 2:01:57.

Triathletes, competing for $10,000 first prize in each of the races, head to Hungary on August 10 before getting ready for the trip to Bermuda.
