Ireland Rangers won the right to play off for a place in the Premier Division next season as yesterday's 0-0 draw against Somerset Eagles guaranteed them the First Division runners-up spot.

As the second-placed team in the lower division, Rangers will now battle Somerset over two legs, with the winner earning the right to play in the top flight and the loser condemned to the First Division.

The Dockyard side entered with the knowledge that a point would be sufficient, but outright victory by Eagles would likely have earned them a place in the play-off provided St. David's claimed less than maximum points.

Resolute defending combined with an anaemic Eagles attack ensured the ultimate stalemate, which suited Rangers just fine.

After missing out on automatic promotion this time last year on the season's final day, they at least now get the opportunity to try again.

St. George's 2 Hamilton Parish 1 The Premier showed up, as did Neil Paynter and his merry band and the party, it seemed, would last forever.

St. George's finally were able to physically grasp the First Division trophy yesterday as Jennifer Smith did the honours of handing the gleaming silver goblet to her resident team following yesterday's match at Wellington Oval.

Fittingly St. George's won the match as well, downing Hamilton Parish 2-1 behind goals from Sinclair Gibbons and Sinclair Smith, while Alvin Baker replied for Parish.

Goalless at the break, the east enders went ahead soon after the restart, only to have the visitors draw level. However, the home team assured themselves of maximum points with a late winner.

St. George's had already secured the title two weeks' ago, making what occurred yesterday a mere formality.

Prospect 0 St. David's 4 Prospect were competitive for the first 45 minutes which ended scoreless but then succumbed to a four-goal blitz in the second half at Police Field.

However, Prospect's goal spree was still not enough to help their cause as a draw by Ireland Rangers denied them a place in the promotion play-off.

Instead they had to settle for third place.

O.J.Minors led their attack with two goals while Chris Foggo and Keenan Butterfield got the remaining two.
