Firefighters, Serco resume talks today
Airport this morning in a bid to resolve the dispute over a new shift system.
About 12 of the 15 firefighters working for Serco Aviation Services have refused to work the new shift rota introduced ten days ago, but instead have stuck to their original working hours.
They claim they were not given the official 14 days notice of the shift changes, as stated they should be in their contracts, and were not given an opportunity to discuss them further.
They have continued to go into work since the dispute began, but Serco have only utilised the three firefighters willing to work the new shift, along with fire officers, to cover passenger flight arrivals at the airport.
However, Serco is refusing to pay the men their wages for last week, leading to another disagreement between the Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU) and management.
Last night, Mr. Furbert said he was meeting with the firefighters at 9.30 a.m.
this morning in the hope that they can move the situation forward.
However, he said in Saturday's Royal Gazette that he did not know what else he and the men could do.
He said several options had been put on the table, but it appeared Serco was still not happy.
