DAB to look again at playground proposal

Government-owned land on Horsehoe Road have been resubmitted because the original deadline had lapsed.

And ground could be broken in a few weeks and construction could be underway, if planning approval is granted.

Calvin Simons, who ran alongside Anthony Santucci in Southampton East for the United Bermuda Party in the 1993 election, said the community was keen to see the project succeed.

Southampton residents have welcomed the plans for the complex, which would be built on a plot of Government land adjacent to the Southampton Rangers Sports Club.

Area youths already use the grassy 1.6-acre space as an informal soccer pitch.

It is intended that the site be used for the proposed playground in an area short on facilities for young people.

Mr. Simons said:"The original application had expired and we have just renewed it.

"We still think the playground is a good idea and very necessary. As soon as we can start we will begin construction.'' The land, which belongs to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Parks is currently leased to the Southampton sports club as a recreational field and parking area and is zoned as an open space.

Should planning permission be granted, Mr. Simons said his four-member Southampton East Playground Committee will lay the groundwork for a fully equipped playground, soccer pitch and car park to be used as a basketball court.

It is understood financing would come from Government as well as other private sources.
