Glenn and Corey take Bay into first place
Bailey's Bay 170-6 Bailey's Bay moved to the top of the Premier Division Overs standings following this convincing four wicket defeat of Police.
Sparkling performances by Glenn Smith and Corey Hill with the bat and ball respectively engineered the demise of the home team, while spurring Bay to victory.
Hill, coming off his best showing ever the day before during the first round of the Eastern Counties when he took seven wickets for 26 against hapless Flatts, continued in a rich vein in leading the attack once again.
The right-arm, swing bowler, after displacing opener Donovan Livingston during his initial spell, came back to mesmerise the middle order, ending with figures of four for 26 from his allotment of 10 overs.
Also enjoying a fruitful day for Bay in the bowling department was Dennis Pilgrim, whose left arm medium pacers reaped dividends of three for 38, with all three offering catches that nestled in the hands of Cal Dill Jr.
Noel Gibbons and Jermaine Outerbridge each took one wicket.
Of the vaunted Police bats only three were able to make noteworthy contributions, as the rest of the line-up caved in under the pressure perpetrated by their adversaries.
Peter Philpott led the way with an unbeaten 41, running out of partners with four overs remaining, while next high was Ferdinand Thorne, who registered 33 from 65 balls, including four fours, before being undermined by Pilgrim.
Skipper Dennis Archer was next high with 28, that also included four fours and came from 34 balls.
Meanwhile, Smith encountered no such difficulty against the attack produced by the men in blue, scorching 78 runs, impeccable timing and placement the hallmark of his innings.
Smith and fellow opener Roger Trott put up Bay's first 50 in just 25 minutes from 5.2 overs, with Smith contributing 32 of that total, while the 100 came in 19.2 overs.
The left-hander's own 50 came from a mere 32 balls and by the time he was out, caught hooking at the backward, square-leg boundary by Philpott, Bay were well on their way at 115 for three.
In all Smith slammed eight fours and three sixes in a brutal knock that encompassed but 57 balls and send a definite message to the St. George's selectors regarding the youngster's form.
Police got a glimmer of hope as the Bay middle order collapsed, with Ricky Hill (one), Charlie Marshall (14), Noel Gibbons (16) and Corey Hill (four) going cheaply in quick succession. However, number seven Irving Romaine (17 not out) and Dill (10 not out) at number eight saw them safely through.
Emerging as the most successful Police bowler was Roger Blades, who managed two for 49. Taking a wicket apiece were Diallo Sharrieff, Michael Jackman, Philpott and Dennis Archer.
Bay moved to 10 points in the division -- the same as Western Stars, who incurred a no result in their match against St. George's -- but lead the St.
John's Road via better net run rate.
In what was to be the big match of the day, the weather played the biggest part as Stars batted for just one over before the rain came. Because of the late arrival of the umpires the game did not start until 1.10.
A second game that did not go ahead was the encounter at Sea Breeze Oval between Cleveland and Willow Cuts. No umpires showed up for that match.
