Lili threat puts paid to triathlon
the Bank of Bermuda Triathlon.
As as result, yesterday's individual event in Hamilton, already postponed from two weeks earlier, was cancelled and will not be rescheduled, officials said.
The call was made on Saturday afternoon after wind and rain and the lingering threat of Lili resulted in hazardous water and road conditions.
"We are sorry to have to make this decision but, again in the interests of safety and of the participants, we feel it prudent to cancel the (five-kilometre) fun walk and the individual triathlon,'' Elizabeth Ward, protocol and special events officer for the Bank of Bermuda, said in a statement.
A hectic fall line-up of events in the community and cooler water temperatures mean there are no plans to reschedule the triathlon, she added.
Both the walk and triathlon are expected to be held next year, said Ward.
The 113 triathletes entered in the 15.5-mile swim, bike and run will be reimbursed for the $25 entry fee and will be contacted by a member of the race committee next week.
"We would also like to thank those individuals and organisations who gave so generously of their time and services,'' said Ward.
Meanwhile, the weekend weather didn't have its own way with the rest of the sporting schedule.
Yesterday morning's cycling criterium went ahead as planned at the former US Base in St.David's, and all but three of yesterday's FA Cup first round soccer matches were played.
