Gritty Greens shatter Somerset's record

Continuing their recent revival, lowly BAA rose up to shock previous First Division co-leaders Somerset on the tails of a gritty display at BAA Field yesterday.

The Trojans were floored by a goal in each half from the home side, which had forward Clevie Critchlow and midfielder Paul Franco emerge as heroes from this battle waged in continuous drizzle.

It marked Somerset's first loss in league play this year, and ended a 13 game league unbeaten streak dating back to January 10.

It was BAA's second win in their last three matches, one which was much needed as they are soon to be without key members Meshach Wade and Dwayne (Streaker) Adams when both travel to Jamaica next week with the Under-23 squad for Pan American Games qualifying matches.

"We know that every game is a challenge,'' said BAA coach Johnny Adams afterwards. "After losing the first three games to start the season we had to pick up points.

"Our defence needed work and Meshach Wade and Streaker have come in and strengthened us at the back. Another problem has been getting goals. Today we got them.'' Indeed, goals win matches, and after a pair of early misses from Somerset striker Richard Scott it was Critchlow who showed how to capitalise on chances when he put BAA ahead in the 23rd minute.

A long free-kick taken by Adams into the Somerset penalty area saw centre-back Paul (Pablo) Place fail to clear, paving the way for an alert Critchlow to sneak in a header that sailed past advancing goalkeeper Andre Hendrickson.

Clearly disturbed by the strike, Somerset began to unravel, pointing fingers and bickering among each other.

BAA, meanwhile, grew in confidence, showing more purpose in attack, with Critchlow and Tito Smith creating anxious moments for the Trojans defence.

Wade kept things tidy at the back along with Treadwell Walker, Mark Thorne and Duncan Ashworth, cutting out numerous forays by the West Enders.

Somerset coach Josef Gooden immediately made the decision to move Duval Binns from sweeper to midfield, replacing him with captain Andrew Rahman. The move gave Somerset more options in the middle with Binns' play-making ability, but did not produce the goal Gooden sought.

Rodney Bascome was inserted by the coach to begin the second half and he almost paid immediate dividends, but was denied by Adams, who went full length to his left to snare a goal-bound shot in the 58th minute.

However, just as Somerset were enjoying a lengthy period of domination Franco struck with a fortuitous effort. Combining on the right in the 68th minute with substitute Andrew McCulloch, Franco attempted a cross that floated over the flailing arms of Hendrickson into the far corner.

This goal floored Somerset, who could only notch a consolation tally seven minutes from time on a tap-in by Jermaine Burrows.

Although many viewed the result as a tremendous upset, coach Adams took it all in stride.

"We knew we would be under pressure, but we never thought we would lose today,'' he said. "You have to know how to absorb pressure without conceding goals and we did that.

"Somerset were on top, but they're not the best team and -- not taking anything away from them -- we knew we could beat them coming in...we played just as well as them today.'' Somerset dropped from first to third while BAA climbed from ninth to eighth.
