Ratteray remanded in custody once again
A man who threatened to kill Magistrate Edward King, damaged a court computer and sent Junior Crown counsel Veronica Daley scurrying for cover was once again remanded in custody on Friday.
Vance Ratteray, 41, of Cottage Hill Road, Hamilton Parish appeared in plea court on Friday expecting to face charges of threatening behaviour and causing wilful damage to a computer belonging to Bermuda Government.
But on Friday the file was not yet completed and Mrs. Daley asked for the trial to be set for Wednesday next week.
Senior Magistrate William Francis remanded Ratteray until then.
Ratteray went on a rampage and threatened to kill Mr. King on Thursday when he was in court for using offensive words on December 17 last year on Thursday.
He also failed to show up for court on three occasions for charges of stealing, assault, and violently resisting arrest and two warrants were issued for his arrest.
Ratteray claimed on Thursday he got the dates mixed up.
When he was remanded by Mr. King he became violent and punched the court computer causing it to fly through the air before it came to rest below the partition dividing the magistrate from the court.
He is charged with stealing a pair of shoes from Wayne O'Brien at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, Hamilton on Sunday June 20. The charges of assault, and violently resisting arrest arise out of the same matter.
Since December 17, 1998 he was to appear in court for using offensive words in Smiths Parish but for 15 month he managed to elude the court system.
Ratteray was brought back to court at 2.30 p.m. on Friday but he again became vociferous and refused to remain quiet while the charges were read.
Mr. Francis ordered that Ratteray be taken from the court.
