Taxi drivers meeting Minister's challenge
more cohesive.
With more than 100 members signed up, the taxi division of the Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU) has met the challenge of Transport Minister Dr. Ewart Brown.
Dr. Brown last month told taxi drivers and operators ata meeting to band together to give the industry a voice.
"Give us an organisation we can negotiate with,'' Dr. Brown said. "I am not interested in trying tomorrow morning to work with an industry that is so fragmented.'' And he called on the president to get at least 100 members.
BIU President Derrick Burgess, while not divulging the exact number of members, confirmed it was in excess of 100. He also revealed that he planned to give Dr. Brown the news today. BIU taxi division president Neville Darrell said that at the time of the meeting last month about 80 people had signed up: "We had 80 people previous to the meeting and after Dr. Brown spoke, it had some bearing on more people signing up.''
