Now Police have warned people to be wary about receiving cheap jewellery.

The thieves smashed the display window of Walker Christopher Ltd. in the early hours of Sunday.

They grabbed jewellery from the trays, and fled into the dark.

The raid at the Front Street store was discovered at about 5.30 a.m.

Police yesterday declined to give the value of the haul, although they described it as "substantial''.

The jewellery has not yet been itemised, said Police spokesman Sgt. John Dale.

The Royal Gazette understands, however, the haul comes to about $60,000.

Sgt. Dale yesterday warned it was an offence to receive stolen goods.

And he urged people to beware being offered cut-price jewellery, except by recognised stores.

"It is a possibility it may have been stolen. If anyone is offered cheap jewellery they should contact the Police immediately,'' said Sgt. Dale.

Anyone with information about the raid should ring Central CID on 295-0011, or the Police code-a-phone, 295-1140.

Nobody from the store could yesterday be contacted for comment.

Also over the weekend, thieves snatched a large amount of drinks from Burrows Lightbourn Ltd. in Harbour Road, Paget.

They included beer, wines, and sodas. Some cigarettes were also taken.

The intruders broke in on Saturday by smashing two windows.
