The Bermuda Athlete of the Year had a leap of 17.41 metres (57 feet 11 inches) at a meet at the University of Texas on Saturday which he won. The University of Arkansas senior broke his old record of 17.26 metres.
"He said he was a little bit sore from a weight session he had on Wednesday but he was very pleased with his jump,'' said national coach Gerry Swan who spoke last night of Wellman's latest accomplishment.
Wellman's next meet will be in Brazil on May 21, an IAAF Grand Prix meet.
Meanwhile, Terrance Armstrong has become the latest athlete to qualify for the Commonwealth Games, having done so recently in the 3,000 metres steeplechase at the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina.
Middle distance runner Armstrong recorded a time of 9:11.55 to get inside the qualifying standard of 9:25. Armstrong, a student at Rider College in New Jersey, joins Wellman, sprinter Troy Douglas and jumper Steven Woodley in qualifying for the Games.
Local sprinter Judy Ann Fletcher placed seventh in the semifinals of the 55 metres during a recent indoor meet. Fletcher recorded a time of 7.34 seconds in the semifinal and 7.35 in the final while representing Bennett College of Greensboro, North Carolina in a NCAA Division III indoor championship meet.
Bennett is a junior college.
