What a weekend!
for Britain and Germany.
The Classic Lions became only the fourth team besides the mighty New Zealand All Blacks to capture the World Rugby Classic championship in the ten years the event has been staged. The Lions -- made up of legendary players from Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland -- scored a convincing 36-10 victory over Argentina before a jam-packed crowd at National Sports Centre.
In a thrilling match before the final, a hard-working Bermuda squad lost its chance to hoist some silverware after a narrow 12-7 loss to Team USA.
And three weeks of hard work paid off for German sailor Roland Gaebler who retained his world title in the Tornado world championships in the waters off Dockyard by the narrowest of margins.
Gaebler -- along with crewman Reni Schwall -- finished first in the last of the eight-race series to snatch the trophy away from Olympic gold medallists Fernando Leon and Jose Luis Ballester, who clung to the lead entering the final day.
Meanwhile, in a crucial soccer match, North Village defeated Hotels 1-0 to grab first place in the First Division. Skipper Kevin Jennings scored what proved to be the winning goal in the match at Bernard Park.
