Warren's 4-goal blitz stuns Colts

Dwight (Payback) Warren warmed up for his Bermuda debut in Jamaica next weekend with four goals as Boulevard blew away Devonshire Colts in this high scoring FA Cup semi-final at Southampton Oval yesterday.

Warren was in the thick of the action throughout, scoring in the fourth and eighth minutes to give Boulevard a great start and then completing his hat-trick in the 58th minute.

Then after Mark Ray pulled a goal back for Colts, Warren struck a fourth -- his best of the game -- with a fine header in the 85th minute from a Dean Boyles cross...just two minutes after returning from a blow to the head.

Shannon Burgess put some respectability in the scoreline with two late goals for Colts but the defeat was a bruising one for the league leaders as it killed off their hopes of a league and FA Cup double.

"I think we did what we planned to do,'' said a delighted Warren afterwards.

"We wanted to get out there and take early control of the game and let them know we were here to play.'' Warren, 28, scored his first goal after his shot took a deflection before beating Troy Hall. The second came from close range after Hall's defence had left him exposed.

In the wet conditions Boulevard looked more sure of themselves as they ran the Colts defence ragged.

Colts made their first substitution in the 39th minute, bringing on Sekai Waldron for Lorenzo Symonds after the veteran midfielder began to have problems with his calf muscles tightening.

At the start of the second half Ellington Weldon replaced Keimon Lawrence and Colts picked up their game with Jahmah Samuels putting an effort over the crossbar.

But it was Boulevard who scored again in the 58th minute, Warren completing his hat-trick with a slight touch past Hall after Bascome did the work down the left flank and put in a cross into the six-yard box.

Kenny Hill missed a chance to make it 4-0 after failing to turn the ball into the empty net when Warren chipped over Hall who had come off his line. Soon after Hall made a double save, first to a Neil Robinson scorcher and then from the rebound which fell to Hill.

Mark Ray pulled one back for Colts in the 62nd minute and went close minutes later after a wall pass with Weldon.

Warren went off on a stretcher after a clash of heads with Hollis as both went up for a header. But there was no keeping him down as he returned three minutes later and in the 85th minute got on the end of a cross by Dean Boyles to place a header past Hall at the near post.

"I was concerned about sending him back out but he was determined in his mind to go back and after two minutes he got another goal,'' said coach Donnie Hill.

Colts, playing for pride, scored from the penalty spot through Burgess in the 87th minute after Leroy Stevens fouled Ray.

And there was more to come as Bascome scored a fine goal to make it 5-2 after shaking off a couple of challenges and firing home from an angle after rounding Hall.

From an even sharper angle Burgess scored again for Colts four minutes into injury time after he chipped the ball over 'keeper Mitchell Steede and inside the far post.

"I thought it would be much closer than that, but I knew as defending champions we had the quality players to get the job done,'' said Hill. "We didn't take anything for granted because Colts were fighting.''
