Amendment to Act passed

intended to give the public access to the accounts of registered charities that solicit public funds.

UBP backbencher Trevor Moniz said that the intent of the amendment is to allow registered charities to show their books to the public. He added that no one would disagree that charities do a lot of good work on the Island.

Mr. Moniz said the public would be better able to understand what charities do with the money they solicit.

PLP MP Paula Cox said that while it was important for charities to be able to solicit funds, it was very important that there was "full, free and frank disclosure,'' so there is not "the smallest hint of scandal from misappropriation or misplacement of funds.''
