'98 Awards wide open

That's about the safest conclusion that can be drawn from the annual Government Sports Awards, to be held tonight at the Hamilton Princess.

Unlike the previous five years, when Wellman, the internationally-ranked triple jumper, has had the award virtually all to himself, there is no lock on who will be named 1997's top male athlete. Last year, the Awards were for the first time divided into male and female categories and it will be a surprise if anyone other than sailor Paula Lewin takes the women's crown.

But with Wellman suffering through -- for him -- an off-year, the path could be cleared for the likes of sprinter Troy Douglas, cyclist Elliot Hubbard and/or cricketer Clay Smith.

Others will be honoured with special awards and citations for their contribution to sports.

The Awards will shown live on ZBM-TV, beginning at 7.30 p.m.
