Mr. Gibbons yesterday issued a statement saying Bermudians must be shocked to hear even a discussion on whether the Police should be armed when carrying out some duties.
"I strongly believe that in our fight to make Bermuda once again secure we must look at a number of issues.'' Issues suggested by Mr. Gibbons include: Greater parental responsibility and co-operation in disciplining young adults and peer counselling programmes in all schools.
Enforced stiff penalties for all criminals convicted of lethal and deadly assault and the use of special juries to try people accused of serious crime.
A special Police unit to deal with street gangs and the introduction of metal detectors at cruise ship terminals.
Greater encouragement and fostering of community efforts aimed at young people.
Review the Attorney General's chambers to see if staffing, experience and pay support a vigorous anti-crime campaign.
Mr. Gibbons added: "We do not need a great deal of talk, we know there is a problem. We do not need more legislation. We need direct action and we need it now.''
