Manders slams ton as Stars march on
Police 82 With veteran allrounder Arnold Manders slamming an undefeated century and then taking two wickets for a mere five runs, unbeaten Premier League leaders Western Stars steamrolled to a comprehensive 164-run victory over Police at Police Field yesterday.
Police had been expected to provide a formidable challenge to the leaders, having stretched their opponents in a recent Central Counties Cup match.
But instead they capitulated, their batsmen conceding defeat in just 25.5 overs.
Only opener Dennis Archer showed any courage at the wicket, stroking 35 as he proved to be the only bat to reach double figures. The remainder had little answer for the bowling of Hasan Durham, who grabbed three wickets, and Gary Brangman, Justin Robinson and Manders who combined for another six.
Durham finished with three for seven off six overs with two maidens. Manders had two for five off four with one maiden, Robinson two for 11 off 1.5 overs and the veteran Brangman two for 22 off seven overs.
Police managed just one respectable stand, as Archer put on 21 with Terry Thomas for the fourth wicket, taking the score from 37 for three to 58 when Archer departed. Thomas scored six.
Earlier Manders had feasted off the Police bowlers, stroking seven fours and six sixes during his innings of 101 not out.
However, Stars had struggled early in their innings and were precariously placed at 120 for six when Manders came in and took the initiative.
Manders and Durham added 93 for the seventh wicket, taking the score to 214 before Durham was run out.
Others among the runs were skipper Albert Steede with 43, Treadwell Gibbons with 24 and Jermaine Postlethwaite with 10.
Archer was the best bowler for Police with two for 33 while Adrian King had two for 37, both bowling 10 overs.
