Firefighters back at work
work following disputes over new work schedules introduced in June.
Manager of Serco Bermuda Contracts Richard Savard said 24 hour coverage had resumed at the Clearwater Fire Station.
He added, "The schedule that is being followed is that which was suggested by management.'' However Bermuda Industrial Union president Derrick Burgess told The Royal Gazette : "We are not in agreement with the new schedule.'' The trouble started on June 17 when a new rota system was introduced by Serco Aviation Services.
Firefighters continued with their original working hours, claiming they were not given the contractual 14 days official notice of the changes or more time to discuss the changes.
Minister of Labour and Home Affairs Paula Cox referred the dispute to the Permanent Arbitration Tribunal under the essential services provisions of the Labour Relations Act 1975.
Mr. Burgess noted that a decision on the firefighters' future action will be made pending the decision of the Permanent Arbitration Tribunal which he expected would meet sometime in August or September.
