Photographer John Weatherill, 85, dies

John Weatherill DFC died aged 85 after a long illness at his home in Warminster, Wiltshire, England, on Monday.
Arriving in Bermuda in the 1930s, Mr. Weatherill was responsible for books featuring Island scenes and people.
After working for the Department of Tourism until 1975, he pursued his photography career -- commuting from his Wiltshire home to the Island to complete the work.
In 1984, he published the first of two books of Bermudian portraits, Faces of Bermuda, spending two years working on the project. It featured politicians, union leaders and everyday people on the streets of Bermuda.
Mr. Weatherill also conducted extensive research on the background on Sir George Somers, Bermuda's founder. Mr. Weatherill is survived by his wife Nancy, children Bruce, Susan and Jonathan, and sister Madge.
After cremation at Salisbury, his ashes are to be interred at St. Mark's Church, Smith's Parish at a later date.
