Warwick no match for Rangers
Southampton 117-4 Champions Southampton Rangers romped to another easy victory in the Western Counties, ending this second round tie at Southampton Oval by 4.30 p.m. on Saturday.
Comfortable winners over PHC in the first round, Rangers were expected to be given a much sterner test by Warwick who named two Cup Match players, Mark Ray and Sammy Robinson, as their guest players.
And the challenge from Warwick began in promising fashion when Perry Scott and Daniel Caines put on 35 in the first eight overs. But once that stand was broken, with Scott bowled by Clarkie Trott after stroking five fours in his 23, the slide began.
In the next 10 overs Warwick limped to 56-4 with Ray, Stevie Lightbourne and colt Robinson contributing just nine runs between them in what would be a significant breakthrough for the holders.
Ray, MVP in Cup Match, faced just four balls before he was caught behind off Carl Garzette and when Lightbourne and Robinson departed in the space of three overs, Rangers had made significant progress.
Caines, the top scorer, was fifth out for a personal contribution of 26.
Ritchie Foggo and Trent Lightbourne, the last of the recognised batsmen, launched a fightback with a sixth wicket stand of 35 in just five overs before and after lunch before smart fielding by Janeiro Tucker ended the stand with the run out of Foggo for 17.
Lightbourne departed two overs later for 19 as Tucker also picked up the wicket of captain Alan Wilkinson in that same over to make it 104-8. Warwick's hopes of a respectable target were gone.
Trott and Dwayne Steede both claimed three wickets, for 21 and 19 respectively, while Tucker supported with two for 11 off six.
Rangers were never troubled as wayward early bowling by left-handers Wilkinson and Kevin Tucker enabled Dexter Smith and Kwame Tucker to put on 25 for the first wicket.
Wilkinson, who had a second spell from the other end, was the most effective Warwick bowler once he found a line, though his three wickets came at a costly 58 runs in 9.5 overs.
Smith scored 27 while Janeiro Tucker accelerated the run chase by taking 22 runs off Reginald Pitcher's fourth over when he hit him for three sixes and a four as the total raced into the 90s.
Tucker was bowled by Caines for 39 which included four fours and three sixes.
Rangers will meet Willow Cuts in the third round on August 22.
