Steede, Bascome too hot for Canadians

winning both matches at the Ross Lord Park in Toronto against the hosts' national team to clinch the Sir Henry Tucker Trophy for the first time. The trophy was introduced in 1985, but after the first match which Canada won it was not played for until the teams revived the clash in yesterday's second match which Bermuda won by two wickets.

Bermuda 279-6 Canada 124-9 Opener Albert Steede fell six runs short of a century after batting through the Bermuda innings as the total posted by the visitors proved much too steep for the Canada team who lost by 155 runs on Saturday. Steede finished 94 not out, hitting four fours in 195 minutes as the overs ran out with Dean Minors at the other end on 43. Dexter Smith was bowled with just two runs on the board, opening the way for Steede and Clay Smith to rebuild the innings with a second wicket stand of 94, Smith scoring 55 with five fours and one six.

Captain Charlie Marshall contributed 39 before left arm spinner Abdool Samad bowled both Richard Basden and Janeiro Tucker cheaply. Lionel Cann then smashed three sixes in a quickfire 20 before he was sixth out on 208. Steede and Minors put on 71 for the seventh wicket, Minors hitting four fours and two sixes in his 29 minutes at the crease. The three players who did not bat were Mark Ray, Peter Philpott and Herbie Bascome.

Canada struggled throughout before finishing on 129-9, with the last batsman, Sanjayan Thuraisingam unable to bat because of an injury. George Codrington was highest scorer with 26 while Samad notched 24.

Herbie Bascome, sharing the new ball with Lionel Cann, finished with four for 24 from eight overs, including wickets with his first two deliveries when he bowled Desmond Chumney and Mike Baldwin. First change Janeiro Tucker took three for 32 off nine.

Canada 180 Bermuda 181-8 Canada put up more of a fight in this match for the Sir Henry Tucker Trophy, as Bermuda won with just three balls remaining.

Again, Canada lost early wickets -- this time the first three with only nine runs on the board.

But Joe Harris resisted the Bermuda attack superbly, striking eight fours and six sixes in his 115.

Harris was well supported by Vivian Sailsman in a seventh wicket century stand which took the total from 75 to 175.

Sailsman made 32.

Bascome, this time sharing the new ball with Richard Basden, enjoyed another four wicket haul, conceding just 29 in his 9.3 overs. Janeiro Tucker claimed two for 19 off 10 and Peter Philpott two for 30.

Albert Steede went cheaply, falling for 12, as Dennis Archer, replacing Dexter Smith, hit 40 and Clay Smith 36. Charlie Marshall contributed 29 and Aaron Adams 19 in the middle order after Richard Basden was run out for one.
