Island image takes knock in UK press
after an article about the Island appeared in a popular British tabloid newspaper.
A report on the Elizabeth Cadell suicide inquest, which has sparked a great deal of media interest in the UK, refers to the Island as having "a seedy hidden side''.
And the article, which appeared in the top selling Mail on Sunday, claims Ms Cadell's death has caused "a scandal that is now tearing apart a community which cherishes its image of almost Victorian propriety''.
Reporter Sharon Churcher, who was covering the inquest for the paper, wrote: "Liz's death has bitterly divided the Island, whose expat residents have little to occupy their evening except for the illicit sex which seems the most common sport in Bermuda''.
Last night Tourism Minister David Dodwell was not available to comment on the article.
Elizabeth Cadell's boyfriend, Policeman Tony Bukhari, is expected to be charged with manslaughter when he appears at Magistrate's Court today. Bukhari was arrested on Friday evening after an inquest into Ms Cadell's death had adjourned for the weekend.
