Govt. `forced' PLP to walk out, Webb says

Shadow Minister Renee Webb has slammed Government for "forcing'' the Opposition to walk out of Parliament in protest on Friday night.

The Hamilton East MP wanted one of her motions to be debated when Home Affairs Minister Quinton Edness said Government had not been given enough notice.

Every member of the Progressive Labour Party left the chamber in disgust when the Opposition lost a vote to have the motion debated.

The matter has now been scrapped from the order paper altogether.

Ms Webb said last night: "The Government forced us to leave Parliament.

"OK, we walked out but what else were we supposed to do? "Sometimes it's better not to put up a fight but just to withdraw.'' Ms Webb tabled the motion -- to complain to the UK Government about dual nationality Bermudians being barred from sitting in Parliament -- on November 19.

But Parliamentary rules state MPs must give notice of when "substantive'' matters are likely to be debated.

Top Government MPs said they only found out at 5.50 on Friday that Ms Webb wanted to discuss the motion.

They added that it could be reintroduced when Parliament reconvenes on February 6.

But Ms Webb, Shadow Minister of Health and Social Services, said: "I'm dissatisfied with that.

"In fact I'm disgusted. The motion was tabled on November 19 and the United Bermuda Party knew I intended to move it.

"If they had a problem with me proposing it on the night, they could have told me earlier.

"I don't want to lose the motion altogether but clearly that was their objective and that is totally unacceptable.'' The motion, to write a protest letter to the UK Government, would have affected PLP MP Dr. Ewart Brown.

Bermudian Dr. Brown, who is also an American citizen, has faced calls to quit Parliament because the constitution does not allow members to swear allegiance to non-Commonwealth countries.

Ms Webb added: "We have not discussed whether or not I will put this motion down again.

"I'm not in Parliament to play the UBP's games and I don't just want to get shot down by them again.''
