Bermudians get visa clearance
problems.
Although Islanders do not need visas for trips of fewer than three months, many have been delayed for hours by French immigration because a computer used by air firms said they did.
But yesterday, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) database was updated saying that British Citizens and those with British Overseas Territories Citizen (BOTC) passports issued in Bermuda did not need visas.
When asked if Bermuda was getting special treatment over other BOTC citizens, IATA's local representative Philip Troake said: "It would appear that way.'' Mr. Troake has been campaigning for years to get the database changed and said it had been very frustrating.
He said: "It sometimes takes quite a bit of prodding. Four different people worked at it.
"Who was actually successful in getting the change made? I don't know.'' Last week French Consul Edgar Humann began issuing letters proving Bermudians did not need visas after admitting holidaymakers were still having problems getting in to France.
Mr. Troake said the letters would be unnecessary now and he could reassure travellers they would not encounter any problems.
Mr. Humann said: "Obviously I am delighted this problem seems to have been solved and people won't have to carry extra documents. But I have letters for anyone who wants to feel extra specially safe.''
