Scoring rampage puts end to Olympic dream
Costa Rica slammed the door on Bermuda's Olympic soccer hopes last night with a 5-0 victory over the Island's Under-23 squad.
It was the second straight loss for Bermuda, 2-0 losers to Costa Rica in the first leg of the Olympic qualifying tie on July 29 at National Stadium.
Costa Rica now advance to the second round of qualifying while Bermuda return home empty handed.
It was a tough night for goalkeeper and skipper Dwayne (Streaker) Adams, who was the hapless victim of all five goals, three of them coming from Bernall Mullins, a substitute for Ronald Gomez at the 55-minute mark.
Mullins scored his first goal one minute after entering the match with his second one coming just two minutes later at the 58-minute mark. Mullins secured his hat-trick at 65 minutes.
Gomez and Costa Rica drew first blood just seven minutes into the match while team captain Reynaldo Park made it 5-0 at 82 minutes.
Bermuda were clearly frustrated by the offensive avalanche, although they enjoyed the first scoring opportunity with just 22 seconds on the clock when Janeiro Tucker was stopped by 'keeper Lester Morgan.
Bermuda's strategy early in the match was to go on the attack and it worked brilliantly until Gomez scored. That goal, coupled with Tucker's near-miss, appeared to deflate the Under-23s confidence.
The low point of the match came when Costa Rica led 4-0 and when Tucker was given a red card after kicking Sergio Morales in the back. When he left the pitch he made an obscene gesture to fans.
"The better team won,'' said coach Mark Trott afterwards. "Missing some chances early in the match really was the key.''
