Man begs judge to change his mind
when, unhappy with his sentence, he began to mumble obscenities.
Gibbons appeared in the Friday morning plea session of Magistrates Court admitting to a charge of speeding at 82 kms on Crow Lane in January. Senior Magistrate Archie Warner fined Gibbons $500 and disqualified him from all vehicles for a year.
Gibbons pleaded with Mr. Warner that he needs to have transportation to get to work in St. David's.' "I just started a construction job in St. David's last week and I need to be there at 7 in the morning,'' he said, "so I really need to be able to have some transportation.
"I am the only bread winner in my household and look after my mother and son,'' he added.
"This will really affect my whole family and put us in financial strain.'' But Mr. Warner refused to extend any discretion to Gibbons telling him that 82 kms "is a ridiculous speed''.
Gibbons felt that he was particularly hard hit when Mr. Warner went on to forfeit his bail of $800 in relation to another charge. Gibbons pleaded not guilty to taking someone's car without permission, but had been bailed to appear for the matter on Thursday.
Claiming that his life was hectic and he had been busy, Gibbons told the Senior Magistrate that it would be "silly'' for him to forfeit his bail.
But Mr. Warner told Gibbons that he showed no respect for the courts and that his excuse was not acceptable.
Gibbons begged to have the order reversed but after mumbling obscenities, was ordered removed from the court.
