Test ace Bishop discusses testimonial match visit
week...hoping to recharge his batteries ahead of the home series against England which begins later this month.
Bishop was here with his wife Jan and left on New Year's Day after flying in from England where he lives. Bermuda had been recommended to Bishop by another Trinidadian, Phil Simmons, who visited a couple of years ago for the Clarence Parfitt testimonial match.
While here Bishop met with testimonial match organisers St. Clair (Brinky) Tucker and Colin Blades and Bermuda Cricket Board of Control official Randy Horton when the possibility of him returning to play in a future testimonial was discussed.
"He loves the Island, although his wife did say the weather was unpleasant for a couple of days. But it was still good to get away and relax,'' said Tucker.
"After the tour in Pakistan, Ian approached Phil and asked him where would be a good place to visit and he said Bermuda. And he said while you are there check out `Brinky' Tucker. But he didn't call for the first few days he was here.'' Bishop flew back to England and will leave this week for the West Indies where the players are due to meet by January 12. The five Test series starts in Jamaica on January 29.
"He is a very nice fella, very intelligent and very down to earth and was very relaxed when he was with us,'' said Tucker.
"I suppose the testimonial has helped get the word around that Bermuda is the place to come. We want want to have the testimonial in September and we are looking forward to bringing in at least two Test or former Test players.'' IAN BISHOP -- brief visit
