Bermuda Biological Station for Research spokesperson Kathleen Gaffney-Frith said the American students will be the first to take part in the new programme aimed at exciting and engaging students in science and technology.

The Rochester, New York, students arrived yesterday and will spend a week at the Biological Station in St. George's. The selected students were chosen based on essays and interviews.

Ms Gaffney-Frith said the teenage students were affiliated with St. Joseph's Villa of Rochester, an agency that provides mental health and supportive services to children, young people and their families. Four villa staff members will accompany the students.

Ms Gaffney-Frith said the Explorer Camp was intended to be the first in a series of annual camp learning opportunities for students. Down the road, the JASON Project hopes to establish multiple camp locations.

The camp will follow the scientific outline of the current project JASON IX: Oceans of Earth and Beyond and will allow participants to work in the field directly with science educators.

Other activities include snorkelling through Shelly Bay, viewing the remains of ancient volcanoes, touring villages to learn the history and culture of Bermuda.
