UBP welcomes talk show ruling
the Government.
On Saturday, The Royal Gazette revealed that a ban on politics being discussed on talk shows had been lifted after a Judge ruled that the order was unconstitutional.
And last night UBP campaign chairman Mike Winfield said the party was pleased with the new ruling.
"I think it's what should have happened, it's freedom of speech which is what Bermuda is all about and we were pleased with the result,'' he said.
When the ban was first imposed nearly two weeks ago, Premier Pamela Gordon denied that it would favour the UBP because talk shows appear to be dominated by callers supporting the PLP.
But Mr. Winfield went on: "I think anything that infringes on the ability of people to speak is wrong. I think both parties muttered at it when the ruling came through but then just got on with their campaign agendas.
"The decision came from the Broadcasting Commission and it was their interpretation of a law -- I don't think either of the parties wanted an argument with the Broadcasting Commission -- if they make a decision then that's that. It takes an independent and Mr. Marshall did the right thing.'' VSB talkshow host Shirley Dill also said it was important for people to have the freedom to express themselves.
But she added that she did not think her show had suffered during the week that the ban was being enforced.
"I think some people found it a refreshing change to be able to talk about other things,'' she said, following yesterday morning's broadcast, in which normal service was resumed with politics dominating the discussion.''
