Social Club no match for Police attack
Police 92-3 Police predictably cruised through to the second round of the Central Counties Cup with this crushing seven-wicket victory over Social Club at Police Field on Saturday.
The home side required just 31 overs to dismiss their opponents -- one of the weakest sides in the competition -- with Richard Austin, Ferdinand Thorne, Peter Philpott and Dwayne Leverock combining to take eight wickets between them.
Thorne took two for four off five overs, including one maiden, while Leverock finished with two for five off three overs. Philpott returned two for 14 off three overs and Austin had two for 32 off 10 overs.
Accurate bowling by this quartet restricted Social Club from the beginning with opener Dwayne Adams (6) dismissed with the total on seven.
His opening partner, Shawn Spencer, battled on heroically and helped steady the innings with a knock of 35, the highest of the innings. Spencer and Webster Mills (5) added 29 for the second wicket.
When Mills departed, Spencer and new bat Kevin Bean (17) put on 24, taking the score to 60. But once Spencer was out, the innings fell apart in short time with none of the remaining batsmen reaching double figures.
Roger Blades and skipper Dennis Archer also bowled well for Police. Blades took one for two off two overs while Archer returned one for 28 off eight overs, one being a maiden.
Police, too, lost an early wicket, that of opener Wayne Clarke (4) with six runs scored.
But the other opener, Daniel Reece (13), and Stevie Lightbourne (44) put on 65 for the second wicket to take Police to within 21 runs of victory.
Police this Saturday face much more formidable opponents in Devonshire Rec. in the second round at Police Field.
