Magistrate jails illegal alien

then tried to hang himself while in custody last Sunday, was jailed for three weeks when he appeared in Magistrates' Court.

The man, who it is believed is called Jose Williams, was represented by lawyer Mark Pettingill.

Sgt. Rex Osborne, prosecuting, said that Williams was believed to have landed in Bermuda sometime between May 1 and July 3.

He was arrested in St. George's on suspicion of stealing some clothing.

He was later charged with stealing the clothing and entering Bermuda illegally.

Through a court-appointed interpreter, Williams pleaded guilty to both charges.

In an interview while in custody, Williams, who originally told Police his name was Jose Francis, said he had come to the Island on a cruise ship and had got off thinking he had reached the United States.

Acting Senior Magistrate the Wor John Judge recommended that Williams be deported after his true country of origin was determined.
