Daniel Augustus will take a narrow one-shot lead into tomorrow’s final round of the Bacardi National Par 3 Championship.

The defending champion shot a three-over-par 57 today to finish his first round just ahead of fellow professionals Nick Jones and Anthony Mocklow at the Fairmont Southampton’s Turtle Hill Course.

A shot further back is Chris Smith, who at even par through 12 was having the round of the day until he too succumbed to the windy conditions and had five bogeys in his closing six holes to finish with a 59.

Scoring was always going to be tricky given the tough conditions and Camiko Smith, who was first out alongside amateur Jevon Roberts, paid a high price for his early start when the wind was at its strongest. Camiko Smith finished with an eight over 62, a shot better than Roberts’ 63.

At nine over Roberts is four shots back of Steven DeCosta, who was the only amateur to break 60 today, and at five over is two shots clear of Matt Gorrell who struggled on the back nine and finished with a 61. There are three players on eight over — Anthony DeSilva, Spencer Wideman, and Shawn Knight — all of who will fancy their chances tomorrow, especially if the wind is again a factor.

Ross Ballantyne, who shot eight over today is leading the senior division by a stroke over M. Jerome Bradshaw, with Zane DeSilva third at 11 over and Allan DeSilva fourth a shot further back.

In the ladies division, meanwhile, Katrin Burnie is six over and has a very comfortable seven shot lead going into the final round. Ebonie Burgess is second at 13 over, with Linda Down a shot further back.

* Jarryd Dillas had his best round of the week at the Latin American Amateur Championships in Argentina today.

The Bermuda golfer, who only just made the cut yesterday, shot a one-under-par 71 to climb from 60 into a tie for 38 place at the Pilar Golf Club.

Dillas, who started his third round at 10, was one over at the turn after a bogey at 15, but then fired off three birdies at the 2nd, 4th, and 6th holes before dropping a shot at 8.

At seven over for the tournament, Dillas is 17 shots behind leader Matias Dominquez, of Chile, who birdied his last three holes for a three under 69 and is one shot ahead of Alejandro Tosti.

The winner in Argentina gets a spot at the Masters in April, and it has been more than 50 years since Chile was represented at the tournament.

“It’s been a while since I’ve led a tournament,” Dominguez said. “I’m used to coming from the back. I will just try to stay in the present and go shot-by-shot.”
