Persistent drunk driver slapped with three-year ban and fines
Drunk driving just three months after losing his licence for the same offence is going to cost a Sandys man dearly.
Jonathan Bucy was fined a total of $2,100 by Senior Magistrate Will Francis last week after he admitted driving while drunk, disqualified, riding an unlicensed cycle, and not having third party insurance.
Bucy, 26, of 5 Littleholm Lane, said his actions on November 24 were "ignorant'' and asked to be allowed to pay the fine by February 26.
He will lose driving privileges for three years, in addition to his penalty last August when he was banned for one year.
Junior Crown counsel Veronica Gordon said Bucy was questioned by Police around midnight on November 24 on South Road, Southampton.
He had been involved in an accident with a taxi and his cycle was extensively damaged.
Ms Gordon said officers noted his eyes were glazed, his breath smelled strongly of alcohol, and he was unsteady on his feet.
Bucy told Police: "I had five cocktails at Paw Paws, and eight bumpers at Mermaid's.'' When officers asked him if he would submit to a breath sample, he said: "I'll take the test. I'll pass it this time.'' Ms Gordon said Bucy then volunteered that he had been taken off the road.
Bucy was found to have 227 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.
The legal limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.
Mr. Francis said: "That was absolutely reckless. Here you have up to 227 which means to say you were up close to 300 when you left. You don't seem to have learned your lesson.'' Bucy was fined $800 for impaired driving, $400 for disqualified driving.
He was also fined $400 for the unlicensed cycle and $500 for not having insurance.
