Two-way traffic planned for Burnaby Street
road, The Royal Gazette has learned.
Corporation of Hamilton secretary Roger Sherratt revealed yesterday that the stretch of road was set to become two-way in a bid to relieve the amount of traffic forced to travel down Reid Street and then up Queen Street to get to Church Street.
"The Corporation of Hamilton is planning to change the direction of traffic to some degree on Burnaby Street,'' he said.
"The intention is for traffic coming down Reid Street to be able to turn right onto Burnaby Street or left down the hill to Front Street or keep going down Reid Street.
"The intention is to relieve the amount of traffic which has to go to the bottom of Reid Street, up Queen Street and then along Church Street to get to places like the General Post Office and the MarketPlace.'' New traffic lights have already been put in at the junction of Burnaby and Church Streets and there are plans in the works for a small traffic Island to remind motorists turning on to Burnaby Street from Church Street to stay on the left.
Mr. Sherratt asked motorists to stick to the left of the island once it is in place, even if the new two-way system is not, so they can get used to the new idea.
But the change to two-way traffic will not occur for two to three weeks, he stressed.
