A man had 18 months of jail time added to his sentence after he admitted stealing more than $4,000 worth of goods.

Marvin Woolridge, 55, pleaded guilty to three counts of theft last year involving $4,120.82 worth of tobacco and electrical items.

He told magistrate Tyrone Chin on Thursday: “I just wanted to put this all together and get it taken care of.”

Woolridge stole cartons of cigarettes, packets of loose tobacco and cigarette papers from the Esso gas station in Devonshire on August 31 last year. The court heard the haul, worth $3,742, was taken from the back of a delivery truck.

Prosecution lawyer Cindy Clarke added that Woolridge also stole two fans worth a total of more than $110 from on July 27 last year from SAL Trading.

Woolridge was spotted by staff and later arrested by police.

The court heard that Woolridge, despite being banned from SAL premises, returned and stole a bag of tools worth about $267 on November 26.

Woolridge escaped on foot. He told the court: “I was on and off drugs, but now I’m here and I want to move this along. But those cigarettes weren’t worth the $3,000.”

He was ordered to serve an additional 18 months concurrent with his present prison sentence, which was imposed at the end of January. Woolridge was jailed for a total of 90 days after he pleaded guilty to stealing two pullout canopies from Masters home centre in Hamilton valued at $129 each, one in June last year and the other in July.

The defendant also admitted the theft of two boxes of chicken legs from Dunkley’s Dairy in Devonshire last August.

Woolridge was sentenced to 30 days in jail for each offence.

But senior magistrate Juan Wolffe ordered that the sentences should run concurrently.
