Short session of House expected
for discussion.
Premier Jennifer Smith will begin the debate on a bill aimed at pushing up the level of scholarship awards given to Bermudian students.
The Bermuda Government Scholarships Amendment Act 2000 aims to increase annual grants to deserving students from the current $12,500 to $15,000.
The bill will also "amend the maximum amount of the two scholarships which the Minister is empowered to increase from $15,000 to $17,500 a year''.
But the bill contains a section to preclude any individual from applying for, or being awarded more than one, Government scholarship.
Government Whip Ottiwell Simmons said he expected the business of the House to be over quickly.
The Opposition, however, still has several Parliamentary questions outstanding, including ones from UBP Legislative Affairs spokesman John Barritt on the running of the Attorney General's Chambers.
Also tabled are questions on Government finance from Shadow Finance Minister Grant Gibbons and on the running of the Bermuda Land Development Corporation from Shadow Development and Opportunity Minister Allan Marshall.
And the motion to adjourn -- when MPs are free to speak on the issues of the day -- may stretch out proceedings.
