Be daring

Garlan Cowen, 22, legal services

It seems like the weather hasn’t made up its mind this week about whether it wants to stay in summer mode or emerge fully into winter.

But a handful of local fashionistas, and whatever the male version of that would be called, were able to strike the right style chord — despite Mother Nature’s mercurial temperament.

The Royal Gazette’s Lifestyle Section caught up with some of these stylish men and women in our first ever ‘Fashionista On The Street’ column.

We got to hear what inspires their everyday style choices and got some of their advice on what regular folk can do to look their best this holiday season.

For underwriter Arin Weller, 32, dressing for the workplace doesn’t have to be drab or boring.

Ms Weller described her style as simple, classic and sometimes fun and said she tries to add a burst of colour to her outfit every now and then.

Her fashion inspiration comes from the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, actress Kerry Washington and designer Victoria Beckham.

“My advice to anyone is not to necessarily follow the trends, but wear something comfortable and something you think you can keep in your wardrobe for a long time,” she said. “Look for different pieces and not something that you’ll just wear one time only. Buy pieces that you love.”

Garlan Cowan, who works in legal services, generally wears a combination of on-trend styles. Yesterday she had on leather tights, suede boots and a flannel shirt tied around her waist.

The 22-year-old said: “I tend to just go with whatever is current.

“I look at fashion blogs so I don’t necessarily have my own style, I just go with what’s new and fun.”

She encouraged people to take risks when it comes to their own fashion and “be daring”.

She said: “I try anything when it comes to fashion because you never know what a piece will look like until you actually try it for yourself.”

It’s not only the women who were rocking some of the latest trends of the season.

Jai-Michael Phillips, a 30-year-old insurance claims manager, credited his stylish business look to the special lady in his life.

He said: “I don’t really have style. My wife dresses me. My advice to any guy would just be to pay attention to your wife.”

Mr Phillips also said he picks up inspiration from Ryan Gosling and Ryan Reynolds, two Canadian actors known for being clean-cut and looking well put together.

Accountant Rodney Gotosa, 38, was spotted wearing a bow-tie — a trend picked up by high-profile stars Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake and Taye Diggs.

Mr Gotosa said he gets his fashion inspiration from all sorts of people and places, including his wife.

He said: “I just try to be the best I can be and versatile to please her, my wife.”

The best tip he could give to other men looking to put their most fashionable foot forward is to wear whatever you’re most comfortable in.

“If you’re comfortable than you can carry it off better,” he said.

Stay tuned for the next ‘Fashionista On The Street’ column in Friday’s Lifestyle section.
