DJ helps couple deliver baby
mother went into labour as her husband drove her to hospital, it was revealed yesterday.
And Mr. Sofianos and proud dad, US Immigration Officer Paul Buchanan, nursed mother Mary through the labour in the back seat of the Buchanan family car on South Road.
But the gentle giant from Mix 106 and Hamilton's Oasis nightclub yesterday played down his role in the birth of the tiny baby girl, to be called Emily Alice.
Mr. Sofianos added he had served in the Bermuda Reserve Police for three years and had some first aid training -- but admitted nothing could have prepared him for a front-line role at a birth.
He said: "The father did most of the work -- I just tried to make her comfortable and make sure everything was OK.
"If anybody's the hero he is -- I would have lost my mind if my wife was to have a baby in the car. He was a lot cooler than I was.'' Mr. Sofianos -- who was carrying his fresh laundry in his own car -- provided a clean T-shirt to wrap the new-born babe in as they waited for an ambulance to arrive.
The drama began around 11.30 p.m. on Wednesday night as Mr. Buchanan, 33, rushed his wife, 31, to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital from their St.
George's home.
But -- only yards from the hospital at the junction of South Road and Tee Street -- he had to admit defeat and deliver the baby himself.
Mr. Sofianos said: "Paul just flagged me down. I could hear a woman screaming and my first thought was it was an accident -- which I suppose it was, in a way.'' Mr. Buchanan said Emily, a sister for Carly, 4, started to put in an appearance near Shelly Bay and beat the couple in the race to the maternity ward.
He said: "Mary said she could feel the head coming out. I was trying to make it to the hospital -- I knew we were close, but I just had to stop.
"My wife did it all, really. I just caught the baby coming out.
"It just happened so fast. By the time I got from my side of the car to hers it was almost over. Thank God there were no complications.
"When the baby came out, she just screamed right away, so I was really relieved. I'm really glad I didn't have to spank her.'' And he praised Mr. Sofianos for his assistance in bringing little Emily into the world.
Mr. Buchanan said: "He was a terrific help -- he gave me a lot of support.
When I stopped the car and there were no headlights in either direction, I was a bit worried.'' Yesterday Mrs. Buchanan and baby Emily were resting in the maternity unit at the King Edward and were not up to posing for the cameras.
