Social report ordered for thief who struck four times

Twenty-eight-year-old Garth Hayward, of Evans Bay, Southampton pleaded guilty to charges of breaking and entering and theft.

Police Prosecutor Sgt. Donald Grant told the court that Hayward had stolen more than $300 worth of liquor from Julie Hastings Smith on May 10.

Hayward had entered her home on Sentinel Hill through a window while she was away.

Two days later, Hayward entered the Tribe Road Number Three, Southampton home of Lynn Matchum, while she was away, through a window and stole more than $50 worth of liquor, food and cigarettes.

On June 10 Hawyard entered Ida Wilson's home on Sentinel Hill and stole a portable tape-CD-radio player worth more than $200.

And on June 17 Hayward broke into the home of Sentinel Hill resident Joanne Dill, through a window, and stole $55 worth of liquor.

But he tripped an alarm system and was arrested by Police.

Hayward was scheduled to appear in court on May 8 for a similar offence which occurred on February 7, but a social inquiry report which had been ordered was not yet completed.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis said he had only received a letter from Probation Services informing him that Hayward had an alcohol problem.

Mr. Francis ordered Hayward to remain in custody until the full social inquiry report was completed. It is expected to completed on August 28.
