Accused to receive help
pipe was remanded into custody for psychiatric treatment yesterday.
Magistrates' Court yesterday heard how, on November 3, P.c. Chris Wheddon had stopped at the house of 36-year-old Aubrey Garfield Harris after being flagged down in his patrol car.
Harris, of Middle Road, Southampton, proceeded to complain about two workmen who were on his roof and were, apparently, refusing to come down.
Prosecutor Veronica Gordon said when P.c. Wheddon refused to take immediate action against the workmen, the defendant turned hostile.
Harris pulled a piece of pipe out from the bushes and hit the officer over the head repeatedly. P.c. Wheddon was stunned and he fell over, Miss Gordon said.
When more Police arrived to help, they found Harris standing over P.c.
Wheddon, still brandishing his weapon.
Attempts to arrest him were met with violent resistance.
Senior Magistrate Will Francis was shown medical reports which indicated that Harris is suffering from schizophrenia.
He was subsequently put under the care of the medical authorities for treatment.
