Man denies passing on STD to teenager
with a venereal disease, claimed he did nothing more than speak with her.
In a Magistrates' Court trial yesterday, the man, who is charged with unlawful carnal knowledge of a minor, denied that he slept with the girl on two occasions in May and June, 1993. He also denied suffering from a sexually transmitted disease.
The girl, now 16, claimed she visited the man's apartment twice and had intercourse in his room.
She added he was aware of her age and said she had had no sexual relations prior to the encounter.
But a medical examination in July, 1993 showed the girl tested positive for gonorrhoea.
The girl's doctor, Dr. Elisabeth Mayall yesterday, testified that she referred the girl to an STD clinic in the Caribbean where she was successfully treated.
Dr. Mayall added upon questioning by prosecutor Insp. Peter Duffy that in some cases, a man may be unaware he has the disease.
Early symptoms may subside as the disease moves deeper into the body, she said.
The girl's mother also took the stand. She claimed the accused telephoned her daughter regularly at her home using his nickname.
The man denied telephoning the girl or knowing her name.
The trial continues today before Acting Magistrate the Wor. Edward Bailey.
