Government Information Services spokeswoman Valerie Pethen, who is one of the media relation officers for the event, said yesterday that the race was abandoned due to a lack of wind between the Island and South Carolina.
She added: "There are 12 Class C ships who were participating in the side race and one Class A ship, the Libertad .'' She noted that there were still some 44 Bermudians who were travelling on that leg of the trip.
The ships will stop over in South Carolina before continuing to Boston for the next leg of the race.
