Premier says Government represents all Bermudians

Premier Jennifer has claimed Government represents all the people -- despite her Chief of Staff Colonel David Burch claiming he is not interested in the 46 percent who voted for the United Bermuda Party.

While taking a different position from her outspoken Chief of Staff, the Premier said people were frustrated that the Progressive Labour Party Government always seemed to have to justify being the majority.

And she claimed the criticism was unfair because UBP MPs allegedly never say they represent those in their constituencies who didn't vote for them.

In a TV interview last night, Ms Smith was asked about Col Burch's recent comments that he didn't care about the 46 percent of Bermudians who voted UBP.

She said: "Some people I don't think should always express their frustration and perhaps express it that way, but you will find a great minority of people (who feel) resentment that a majority now has to somehow validate the fact that they have a majority.'' She continued: "Once you become the Government you represent all people, even those you don't agree with.'' Col Burch's remarks inside and out of Senate last week have reinforced those who accuse the Government of being arrogant and dismissive of anyone who disagrees with them.

In another Senate meeting, Col Burch interrupted UBP Senator Maxwell Burgess to say: "You don't get it, do you? We don't care what you think.'' And at a public meeting last month on the Constitution when a UBP supporter criticised Government's position, Col Burch was overheard to say: "These people make me sick.'' At the same meeting, according to the Bermuda Sun , when UBP MP Allan Marshall was speaking, Col Burch provoked amusement among those sitting next to him, by mocking the speaker, saying: "Yeah, yeah. Blah, blah, blah''.
