BBC considers relaunching easy listening radio station
relaunching an "easy listening'' radio service.
The news will be sweet music to the ears of thousands of ZFB listeners.
Last month the FM-95 service was replaced with Power 95 -- a new home for the ZFB 1230 AM station.
Instead of the big band sound, listeners tuned into disco and reggae.
BBC bosses said "easy listening'' may have struck a chord with many people, but it was not paying its way by pulling advertisements.
The decision, however, sparked a flood of complaints to The Royal Gazette and the BBC.
Now the company is investigating how to satisfy the protesters.
"We are looking at ways of marrying advertising revenue with a product which will appeal to mature listeners,'' said sales manager Mr. Mark Kaufmann.
"I am not at liberty to say what the ideas are, but we have had several meetings on this.'' Mr. Kaufmann stressed the BBC had never underestimated the size of the "easy listening'' audience.
"But it was not being used by advertisers, and the operation was not profitable. That is the bottom line,'' he said.
"We made every attempt to sell the station. It is unfortunate listeners are the ones to suffer.'' Mr. Kaufmann admitted the BBC had received numerous complaints, prompted by publicity.
"We take every letter seriously, but I should point out we have received overwhelming support for Power 95,'' he said. "It is proving a big success and is certainly paying its way.''
